Bachelor of Arts in American Sign Language Linguistics and Deaf Culture Option in ASL - English Interpreting  (120 units)

This new option was recommended by the Academic Senate on April 21, 2016 and concurred by the President on May 31, 2016.

Program Description

This program is designed to teach students to be linguists who can work with signed and spoken languages and their cultures. The Option to our general BA expands on students’ language and culture training to additionally train them to become interpreters between ASL and English. For admission, students must receive a C or better in all required lower division courses, a 2 or higher on the ASLPI national exam, and have a successful interview with an invitation from the ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú BA Option admissions committee to join a Fall semester cohort.

ASLD 101 American Sign Language 1 (4)

Prerequisite/Corequisite: One GE Foundation course.

ASLD 102 American Sign Language 2 (4)

Prerequisite: ASLD 101 or equivalent.

ANTH/LING 170 Introduction to Linguistics (3)

Prerequisite/Corequisite: Any GE Foundation course.

ASLD 124 American Deaf Cultures (3)

Prerequisite: None

ASLD 201 American Sign Language 3 (4)

              Prerequisite: ASLD 101 and ASLD 102 or consent of instructor.

ASLD 202 American Sign Language 4 (4)

Prerequisite: ASLD 201 or consent of instructor.

ASLD 211 Beginning Interpreting and Ethics 1 (3)

Prerequisites: ANTH/LING 170 and ASLD 124.

ASLD 212 Beginning Interpreting and Ethics 2 (3)

Prerequisite: ANTH/LING 170, ASLD 124, and ASLD 211.

 

ASLPI National Exam with a score of 2 or higher;

Successful Interview;

Be selected as one of 20 to 25 students as a member of the yearly cohort
