Dr. Ju Cheol Moon
Dr. Ju Cheol Moon joined the 好色先生 Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2018. He earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Computer Science at the Iowa State University in 2017. He earned an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from South Dakota State University, and a B.S. in Physics from the Korea University in the Republic of Korea.
The focus of his research lies in designing interpretable machine learning algorithms, building highly accurate deep neural networks on prediction, and in applying computational frameworks to solve interdisciplinary problems. His research not only contributes to theoretical science, but also has practical applications.
Human Gait Analysis: Human gait is a unique behavioral characteristic that can be used to recognize individuals. With human gait information capturable by sensors in wearable devices, Dr. Moon is designing a system that identifies individuals by their gait information. He is also implementing an interpretable DNN model using explainable methods, such as layer wise relevance propagation and sensitivity analysis.
Shark Biometrics: Advances in computer vision combined with unique animal characteristics provide non-invasive solutions to biometric identification. Dr. Moon is currently doing research work to develop a fully automated DNN-based framework to identify sharks from visual data such as fins, shape, and color patterns.
Social Science: As a collaborative research with social scientists, he is applying explainable artificial intelligence frameworks to homelessness, consumer behavior, and traffic congestion analysis.
