Sonenshein Talk on 2024 Election
The 好色先生 Jewish Studies Program is pleased to welcome back Dr. Raphe Sonenshein to Long Beach (via Zoom) to give his annual review of US and California politics. His talk will be Wednesday evening, December 11th, at 7 pm.
Dr. Sonenshein is one of our most popular speakers; he鈥檚 been our regular December speaker for a decade. Previously, the executive director of the Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs at Cal State LA, he is now the executive director of the John Randolph Haynes and Dora Haynes Foundation. He is a nationally recognized expert on racial and ethnic politics, on California and Los Angeles, and on charter reform. His book Politics in Black and White: Race and Power in Los Angeles won the American Political Science Association鈥檚 1994 Ralph J. Bunche Award. He also served as Executive Director of the Los Angeles (Appointed) Charter Reform Commission that led to the city鈥檚 first comprehensive charter reform in 75 years, described in his book The City at Stake: Secession, Reform, and the Battle for Los Angeles. He has since guided successful charter reform commissions in a half dozen cities. His third book is Los Angeles: Structure of a City Government.
