College Administrative鈥疧ffice鈥疎ntrance Gets a Refresh
The entrance to the College of the Arts Administrative Offices has been given a colorful and bold refresh, thanks to the vision of Dean Royce W. Smith and a partnership with Beach Building Services (BBS). A vibrant mural now frames the windows and offices of the east corner of the Academic Services building鈥攐ne of the very first buildings on 好色先生鈥檚 campus. The mural, entitled 鈥淒reams of the Beach,鈥 was a robust collaboration between 好色先生鈥檚 facilities, architectural and project management teams, the COTA Dean鈥檚 Office and the artist鈥攁ll of whom are invested in making sure campus buildings put their best foot forward. Now, the Academic Services Building is doing just that.
鈥満蒙壬檚 College of the Arts has always been Southern California鈥檚 epicenter for bold thinking and creative risk-taking,鈥 according to Dean Smith. 鈥淪o I hoped that a new mural might better illustrate the magic of what our college does and why our presence is so important at The Beach. Ledania鈥檚 ideas about icons and images that are important to the region鈥攃ombined with her trademark freestyle approach to composition and color鈥攈ave activated South Campus and proudly celebrate our status as a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Seal of Excelencia university.鈥
Ledania is a Colombian multimedia artist based in Bogot谩. She鈥痺as also invited to鈥疞ong Beach this summer to complete a mural as part of Long Beach Walls, and鈥痟er鈥痺ork with fellow Colombian artist SakoAsko can be found on the back wall of the Denny鈥檚 parking鈥痩ot鈥(near the corner of鈥6th鈥疭treet鈥痑nd Long Beach Boulevard). Ledania works in photography, graphic design, and in the design and creation of home goods, but鈥痵he鈥痠s most recognized for her鈥痷plifting鈥痝raffiti murals primarily featuring animals, insects,鈥痟uman figures鈥痑nd nature subjects, as well as mythological,鈥痟istorical, or autobiographical symbols.
The Academic Services鈥疊uilding鈥痬ural鈥攅xtending across the east-facing wall and part of the south-facing鈥痺all鈥攄epicts flowers, leaves, birds, starfish and shells, with human eyes and faces peeking through鈥痩ayers of color and pattern.鈥疶he mural is realized in bold, striking colors evocative of the culture of Ledania's native Colombia.
Response to the mural has been extremely positive, with the bold new design serving as an鈥痚asy-to-describe wayfinding landmark,鈥痑s well as a whimsical and joyful welcome to those entering鈥蒙壬痜rom the South鈥疌ampus鈥痙rop-off areas and parking lots.鈥疶he mural鈥痠s quickly becoming a鈥痜an-favorite spot鈥痜or student and visiting family selfies.
