This Memorandum of Understanding outlines the consensus reached by the Environmental Science and Policy program, the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Natural Science and Mathematics, and the Division of Academic Affairs, based on the recently conducted program review. It describes the goals to be achieved, and the actions to be undertaken by all parties to this MOU to achieve these goals, during the next program review cycle. Progress toward goals is to be addressed in the biennial report.
The program in Environmental Science and Policy was established in the 2002-03 academic year. It had one previous program review cycle, culminating in a MOU in September 2009. Since the time of the last review, the number of majors has grown considerably. The number of primary degrees granted for the BA and BS tripled from 2010 to 2014. The external review report stated: 揟he ES&P program has grown into a vibrant interdisciplinary program that 好色先生 can be proud of.�
Strengths of the program were found to be that it is truly multi- and interdisciplinary, with a capstone that integrates the curriculum via a real-world project. The internship opportunities provided to students are excellent and the faculty is highly skilled and dedicated. The faculty抯 work on assessing student learning and 揷losing the loop� was found to be exemplary. Further work was suggested to distinguish between the BA and BS in terms of program outcomes; this was a recommendation in the previous MOU.
Because of its multi-department structure, communication and coordination are a challenge, and there is no formal process for general faculty involvement in decision making. More tenure-track positions and other resources are needed to meet instructional, advising, and administrative needs. There are high fail rates in some of the Economics sequence of courses. The review revealed that students need more information on how course pathways lead to specific or general career opportunities.
It is therefore agreed that:
The program will develop formal and clearly articulated bylaws and procedures for governance, for faculty communication within the program and with collaborating departments, and for making and disseminating decisions.
The program will hold meetings of the ES and P Faculty Advisory Committee 2 -3 times per semester to generate collaboration, to discuss course content, and to foster intentional scaffolding of courses. In addition, the program will hold a town hall style meeting with ES and P affiliated faculty once a year to coincide with an Advisory Committee meeting. The purpose of the town hall meetings is to generate communication and collaboration and to share curricular updates.
The program will hold a meeting once per year (in Spring) with relevant chairs and appropriate associate deans to discuss curricular course changes, budgetary issues, hiring needs, and to plan the following academic year
Course offerings will be reviewed with an eye for intentional scaffolding opportunities.
Recommended curricular pathways will be identified, published and communicated to inform students of specific career or graduate study opportunities.
Admission standards for community college transfers (particularly for B.A. degree) will be revisited and discussed by the Faculty Advisory Committee.
With respect to assessment of student learning, the faculty will distinguish between program level learning outcomes for the BA and the BS; continue to conduct written ESP 400 exit interviews and use those results for program improvement.
The program will work with the College of Natural Science and Mathematics and the College of Liberal Arts to support the program with tenure lines, using the normal processes within the colleges as requests are brought forward by the departments involved in the program.
Assigned time for the program director, staff support, advising support, office space and operations funds will be provided at the level provided to programs of similar size and type.
The program will provide a biennial update on progress made towards the actions agreed to in this MOU, to be submitted in conjunction with its biennial assessment report.
