Summer Session Financial Aid
Financial aid can help cover some of the costs of taking classes during the summer. Since the summer semester at ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú is considered the last term of the academic year, your eligibility will be based off of your 2023-2024 FAFSA application. Aid funding for the summer comes from the Pell Grant, Cal Grant, Direct Loans, or private loans. Your aid options will typically consist of any aid you did not use during the academic year.
Due to limited available funding, your summer aid package may be very different from the awards and amounts you received during the academic year. Specifically, State University Grant (SUG), SEOG, EOP, and Federal Work-Study funding is not available during the summer.
For Summer 2024, you do not need to submit an application for any summer grant aid. You will be awarded grant aid within a week of enrolling for summer, beginning in April 2024, as long as you have eligibility and have enrolled in summer courses. If you are interested in borrowing loans, you will need to submit a loan application for summer.
Eligibility criteria for summer aid:
- You must be meeting the terms of ºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú's Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards
- You must have filed a and completed any required financial aid processes
Review the following information for the types of financial aid available for Summer 2024:
Federal Pell Grants
If you are an Undergraduate or Credential student, and you received a Federal Pell Grant during the academic year, there are two ways you may be eligible to receive a Pell Grant during the summer:
- If you did not enroll full-time in the fall and spring semesters, you may have some remaining Pell Grant eligibility for the summer semester
- If you received 100% of your scheduled Pell award during the fall and spring semesters, and you are enrolled in at least 6 units during the summer, you may be eligible for an additional Pell Grant payment
Any Pell Grant disbursement you receive during the summer semester will be applied towards your overall Pell Lifetime eligibility. Please log in to the site to view your Pell Grant usage and to determine the amount of eligibility you have remaining.
Your actual Pell Grant eligibility will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and will be reflected on your MyºÃÉ«ÏÈÉú student center.
For Summer 2024, you do not need to submit an application for any summer grant aid. You will be awarded grant aid within a week of enrolling for summer, beginning in mid-March 2024, as long as you have eligibility and have enrolled in summer courses
Your Pell Grant eligibility is going to be based on a number of factors specific to you. These include your summer enrollment; use of Pell Grant during the academic year; and your lifetime use of Pell Grant. If you are eligible to receive Pell Grant during the 2023-2024 year but were not enrolled full-time during the year, you may be eligible for the remainder of your eligibility during the summer as long as you are enrolled in at least 1 unit.
If you were full-time during the fall and spring semesters and received your full Pell Grant during those terms, you can still use part of your overall Pell Grant eligibility for summer if you enroll in at least 6 units. You might be limited by your overall , as students may not receive more than six years of full-time Pell Grant eligibility (600%). Confirm your lifetime usage at the site.
Your actual Pell Grant eligibility will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and reflected on your .

Cal Grants
If you are an Undergraduate student, and you received Cal Grant during the academic year, you may opt to use Cal Grant during the summer.
- Must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress
- You are required to enroll in a minimum of 6 units and these units should be applicable to your degree.
- Using Cal Grant during the summer reduces your total program eligibility for Cal Grant. If you take the summer payment option, you might not have enough eligibility remaining to assist you in future semesters. Please check your portal for remaining Cal Grant eligibility.
Example: If your remaining eligibility for Cal Grant is one year (100%), you will use one semester (50%) for summer and will only have one semester (50%) of Cal Grant for the following academic year.
Cal Grant eligibility will depend on your remaining eligibility and number of units, with minimum of 6 units required for consideration.
Here is a breakdown of the Cal Grant payments (assuming student has a minimum of one full semester of Cal Grant eligibility remaining):
Cal Grant A/B Fees (Tuition)
6-8 units | $1,436 |
---|---|
9-11 units | $2,153 |
12+ units | $2,871 |
Cal Grant B Stipend
6-8 units | $414 |

Cal Grant requires a minimum enrollment of 6 units during the summer. Your official payment will be based on the number of units that you’re enrolled in at the time of awarding. If you change your enrollment throughout the summer term, your Cal Grant will be adjusted. The adjustment can result in reduction/cancelation of the Cal Grant payment, resulting in a bill for any amount that you are no longer eligible for.

If the withdrawal results in enrollment in fewer than 6 units for summer, your financial aid awards are subject to cancellation.
Dropping all of your courses
If you receive financial aid for summer and you withdraw from all courses before the end of the term, you will most likely be required to return a portion of your aid. A calculation will be performed based on when you last attended and/or withdrew from your courses.
