Steps in the Application Process

The Statement of Purpose prompt and other required materials may be found under the "Program Application Materials on MyCED" below. 

Completed applications must be submitted by the following deadlines:

Fall 2025

Application period began: October 1, 2024

  • Cal State Apply Application due date for domestic applicants: June 1, 2025*
  • MyCED Application due date: June 10, 2025

Applications are not accepted after the deadline.

NOTE: Access to MyCED is permitted after submitting the University application in . MyCED links are sent approximately 3-5 business days after completing the Cal State Apply application.

*Please note that international applicants (F1 visa) have an earlier Cal State Apply application deadline of March 15, 2025, for Fall 2025 consideration.

Use  to apply and be sure to complete all components of the application by the published deadline.

The Cal State Apply dashboard is divided into four sections:

  • Personal Information: contact information, biographic information and financial information, etc.
  • Academic History: colleges attended, GPAs, etc.; do not hand-enter transcript information
  • Supporting Information: enter 鈥淚 am not adding any experiences鈥
  • Program Materials: enter "I am not adding any program materials" (these will be submitted on MyCED)

Please refer the tutorial on the GSO Tips and Tutorials for Applying website for tips on filling out these sections of Cal State Apply. Please also refer below for detailed information for what documents to submit for the program materials.

Lastly, there is a non-refundable $70 application fee. Your application will not be processed until this fee has been paid. Please note that the CSU system does not offer a fee waiver for graduate level applications.

Important: you may only apply to one graduate program per CSU.  If you are unsure about which program is best for you, contact the Graduate Studies Office.

After you complete and submit the 好色先生 Cal State Apply application, please upload supplementary program application materials via by the MyCED program application deadline:

  • Statement of purpose (prompt provided below)
  • 搁茅蝉耻尘茅
  • A copy of your valid teaching credential. 
  • Proof of one of the following:
    • A valid US teaching credential with a Bilingual Authorization or certification.
    • Valid Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate, CLAD Certificate, teaching credential with an English Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis.
    • Possession of the  certificate in Early and Middle Childhood/English as a New Language or Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/English as a New Language
    • Six (6) college semester units of a language other than English or verified equivalent.
    • Passing scores on Tests II, IV, and V of the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): World Languages. Scores used for certification purposes may be no older than ten years from the individual passed exam date.

Statement of Purpose Prompt

Essay responses will be used to evaluate your personal, professional, and educational perspectives and experiences, as well as your ability to effectively communicate ideas and organize written thoughts. Responses to essay questions should be double-spaced with a 12-point font and one-inch margin on all sides. Include your full name at the beginning of each document. 

The Dual Language Development (DLD) program offers candidates opportunities to examine how language is used to construct race and how ideas of race influence language and language use. Candidates will engage in interdisciplinary coursework to explore how the relationship between race and language impacts domains like politics and education. To promote multilingualism and cultural affirmation in K-12 classrooms, candidates will critically reflect on issues that impact dual language classrooms and students to identify approaches that support students鈥 academic, social-emotional, and socio-political growth through instruction. 

Reflecting on the goals of the DLD program as described above, explain why this program aligns with your personal and professional goals and values (a total length of 500 words or less for the entire statement).

Optional Essay 
To aid the admission committee in evaluating your application, use this essay to discuss anything in your academic and/or professional history that may require additional explanation. This essay is optional (a total length of 250 words or less for the entire statement).

Your r茅sum茅 should be detailed enough to help the admission committee understand the various experiences 鈥 professional, extracurricular, leadership, and/or volunteer 鈥 that have shaped your interest in the program. Be sure that your resume includes your experiences working with bi-/multilingual students, families, and/or communities. 

Outline your roles and responsibilities within each organization and highlight any special achievements or accomplishments, including: 

  • Position title (e.g., classroom teacher, classroom aide, intern, volunteer, etc.)  
  • Employer (e.g., name of school, school district, community agency, etc.)  
  • Length and dates of experience in that position  
  • 1-2 sentences describing your responsibilities, achievements, and/or accomplishments

Supplemental Materials 

Under the "Copy of Credential Printed from CTC" upload section, please upload the following in one combined file: 

  • A copy of your valid teaching credential. This proof should be a print-out (i.e., screen shot) from the . 
  • Proof of one of the following:
    • A valid US teaching credential with a Bilingual Authorization or certification.
    • Valid Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate, CLAD Certificate, teaching credential with an English Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis.

Be prepared to enter the names and e-mail addresses for two recommenders. Recommendations due by June 10, 2025. You may complete and submit your MyCED application before your recommenders submit their letters.

Who to ask
Recommendations are preferred from a supervisor in a professional setting, a university instructor, or maybe a general recommendation. We encourage you to seek the strongest possible letters regardless of the source. Therefore, we suggest speaking with your recommenders before completing this section.

Once you have entered and saved information for a recommender, an email request from MyCED will automatically be sent to the recommender on your behalf. Please advise your recommender to look for this email in their inbox, as well as their spam or junk-mail folder, as emails do occasionally get filtered out.

Your recommenders will be instructed to respond to the following statement:
Please provide the following relevant to the applicant鈥檚 suitability for graduate study:

  • Academic abilities & intellectual capacity;
  • Personal qualities & maturity;
  • Ability to work with diverse groups of people;
  • Obstacles overcome;
  • Any additional topics that you believe are relevant to the applicant鈥檚 preparation and suitability for this graduate program.
  • It is not necessary to address each of the topics noted above, especially if you do not have a basis for commenting on a certain area.
